The Rise of Eco-Friendly Cabinetmaking
The industry is becoming greener. Eco-friendly furniture (including cabinets) is on the rise, as customers begin to show a preference for furniture built with materials from sustainable sources. According to a 2022 study by Grand View Research, the "global eco-friendly furniture market size was valued at $42.26B (USD) and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 8.6% from 2022 to 2030."

As more and more homeowners are looking for ways to reduce the environmental impact of their home renovation projects, the cabinetmaking industry might need to adapt and evolve. By using eco-friendly materials, finishes, and production processes, cabinetmakers can create high-quality and sustainable products that will appeal to environmentally conscious homeowners.
The good news: According to a 2021 survey conducted by Furniture Today, 87% of respondents are willing to pay more for furnishings "they consider to be eco-friendly, including wood furniture that is certified as responsibly harvested and for home furnishing certified to be environmentally safe."
So what does 'eco-friendly cabinetmaking' really mean?
One of the key elements of eco-friendly cabinetmaking is the use of recycled materials. What we mean is: reclaimed wood, recycled plastic, and other materials that have been previously used in other products. Not only does this reduce the amount of waste generated during the manufacturing process, but also reduces the demand for new raw materials. And using sustainable hardwoods (like those harvested from responsibly managed forests or species that are not considered endangered) is also a key element of eco-friendly cabinetmaking.
Looking for organizations that certify responsibly-managed forests?
When a forest is 'responsibly managed,' this means that it's managed in a way that preserves the health and biodiversity of the ecosystem, while also ensuring that the forest will continue to provide valuable resources in the future. There are organizations responsible for certifying forests as responsibly managed, and making sure that the forest management complies with laws and regulations to manage the environmental and social impact.
Here are a few of our favorite organizations:
- Forest Stewardship Council (FSC): The FSC is an international organization that promotes responsible management of the world's forests. They certify forests and supply chains based on strict environmental and social standards.
- Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI): SFI is a North American organization that promotes sustainable forestry practices. They certify forests and supply chains based on a set of principles and performance standards that cover a wide range of environmental and social issues.
- Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC): PEFC is an international organization that promotes sustainable forestry practices. They certify forests and supply chains based on a set of principles and criteria that cover a wide range of environmental and social issues.
- The American Tree Farm System (ATFS): This program promotes sustainable forest management in the United States and certify forests and supply chains based on standards that cover a wide range of environmental and social issues.
You can also look for wood that is sourced from local suppliers, as it reduces the carbon footprint of transportation and is a way to support local economies.
As consumers, homeowners, and businesses become increasingly aware of the environmental impact of the products they purchase, they're looking for ways to reduce their environmental footprint. By incorporating eco-friendly materials and practices into your business, you can help to reduce the environmental impact of the industry and appeal to a rapidly growing market.
